Took the GX in for a trans service because I hate dealing with sealed transmissions and its overdue.

Get a call that the front brakes are toast. I have been having bad brake vibe but was worried it was something else because I replaced all 4 rotors and pads with EBC this time last year for the same symptoms (brake pulse).

Shop says they are too far gone to even turn! That makes no sense to me since I only tow things with trailer brakes and its not like im doing track days.

Going with Akebono HD rotors and pads this time around. Which will probably be good if I decide I need to tow that boat more than just a few miles. Still, 10,000 miles and completely trashed front rotors? Whats the deal?

My dad uses almost entirely akebonos for Lexus and Toyota. He loves them.

have you heard of GX eating front brakes? I hear this is common but I can’t find it anywhere

Pads evenly worn? If not, is the inboard or outboard pad worn more?

uneven wear, they are looking at stuck pistons but its the same on both side. confident I installed them right and the calipers weren’t leaking...in fact they were in great shape.

Bad/sketchy master cylinder?

Calipers not sliding properly? Multi piston setup with one side improperly bled?

man I hope not. I doubt it though, brakes strong, no soft spots no leak.

Are they EBC green pads? Even though the green are supposed to be milder than red, the green have a bit of a reputation for being dusty and hard on rotors, while the red are relatively low dust and trouble free for a performance pad.

I was thinking of doing EBC red on my 335xi but went with StopTech Sport instead. They stop nicely but aren’t entirely noise-free and dust like mad. The dust is easy enough to clean but it collects on the wheels quickly and is ugly. Which means since I’m not a track rat I’ll probably replace them with EBC red when the time comes.

They were Reds.

I used EBC green in my V8 4runner, and they were shot at 11,000 miles

They do not eat brakes. Usually last 40k miles. He said they will tend to eat if the caliper is bad. The bottom front piston can stick.

If the GX has the same brakes as the 4Runner, the caliper can stick. The sleeves get rusty. This could contribute to your brake wear. But it’s not a common problem in a climate like yours.

I put the upgraded calipers on 2 years ago, they have larger pistons and are less likely to go bad.

I had new pads put on at the same time as well, generic ones, and they’re nearly done already. I did maybe 10000 km (not miles), mostly city driving. I’m thinking about getting HD pads put on, the long life commercial service type. I don’t want to be replacing them again so soon...

Yeah I’ve had stuck Pistons but these look pretty fresh.

You have a good memory! Now I remember doing the math and it being 8k miles.

Running Akebono ASP606 and ASP976 on my GX470 on Centric Premium rotors, and I have no problems in 15k miles or so, so far. I think they’re holding up well but I haven’t poked my head in there lately. I have a garage weekend coming this weekend and I’ll poke my head in to see how they’re holding up. Gotta finish up my rear “airbag trick” lift after the slider install 2 weekends ago :)

interesting to see what mine would look like with a lift. Thought about doing one to replace the 80...don’t love the idea just yet.

This is from the Netflix Lost In Space redux, which is quite good. How much do you suppose Nabisco paid for that?
